Forty-Eighth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians

The forty-eighth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, April 17th, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm. Anabel Rodriguez S., Professor of Mathematics at the Bolivar Maranon Educational Center of Sona and at the Veraguas venue of the Specialized University of the Americas (UDELAS), was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

On this forty-eighth Encounter, Anabel Rodriguez S. shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “The Spiral of Theodorus with GeoGebra.” In this virtual event, Anabel Rodriguez S. explained that GeoGebra is a dynamical mathematical software for all educational levels and offers an online platform with multiple free resources for the classroom. The speaker then defined the spiral of Theodorus as a geometric construction that is created by the union of contiguous right triangles and was discovered by Theodorus of Cyrene. Anabel Rodriguez S. also shared that the spiral of Theodorus shows that there are numbers (the square roots) that cannot be represented exactly as fractions and showed how the spiral is related to the Pythagorean Theorem.
