The Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians #54 took place on Thursday, June 25th, 2026 from 5 pm until 6 pm. Carolina Araujo, Researcher in Mathematics at the Pure and Applied Math Institute (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this Encounter, Carolina Araujo shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “A Journey Through Algebraic Geometry”. In this virtual event, Carolina Araujo explained what geometry is, what algebra is and how algebraic geometry seeks to build bridges between geometry and algebra. The speaker highlighted the work of Johannes Kepler, Maria Cunitz, Sophie Germain, Pierre de Fermat and Andrew Wiles.
