The forty-fifth Math Webinar in English took place on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Dr. C. Bryan Dawson, Professor of Mathematics at Union University in Tennessee, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this forty-fifth Math Webinar in English, Dr. C. Bryan Dawson presented on “The Hyperreal Numbers.” The speaker started the virtual event by explaining how the number system was first expanded to include the negative numbers, then to include the rational numbers, afterwards to include the irrational numbers, and finally to include the imaginary numbers. Dr. C. Bryan Dawson described the hyperreal number system, which adds infinitely small numbers, also known as infinitesimals, as well as infinitely large numbers to the real numbers. The speaker also shared the connections of these ideas with calculus and other scientific areas and recommended the book “Infinitesimal, How a Dangerous Mathematical Theory Shaped the Modern World” by Amir Alexander. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
