The thirty-third Math Webinar in English took place on Thursday, February 15th, 2024 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Geillan Aly, Founder of Compassionate Math, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this thirty-third Math Webinar in English, Geillan Aly presented on “A New Day: Working Through Mathematical Traumas”. The speaker explained how past math experiences can result in people feeling that they are not good at math. Geillan Aly gave the participants the opportunity to explore and reflect on their feelings towards mathematics. The speaker highlighted the following main messages: 1. We are not alone, 2. Our past experiences are most likely not tied to us as individuals but are a result of sociohistorical forces. Geillan Aly then encouraged participants to analyze their personal relationship with mathematics and reorient it based on what they had discovered. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
