The Math Webinar in English #51 took place on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Dana Mackenzie, a mathematician who went rogue and became a popular science writer, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this Math Webinar in English, Dana Mackenzie presented on “How to Solve a 2,000-Year-Old Problem”. The speaker shared the story of when a college friend sent him a recreational math problem in 2012 that took him a year to solve. Dana Mackenzie then defined the problem that has to do with horse racing, described the history of the problem and explained how he found the solution. The speaker also mentioned that this presentation is a preview of his book of the same topic that will be published next year. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
