The Math Webinar in English #50 took place on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Bjoern Muetzel, Professor of Mathematics at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this Math Webinar in English, Bjoern Muetzel presented on “Reach Out and Touch Space”. The speaker took us on a journey through the fascinating world of tessellations on the plane, on the sphere and even on the mysterious hyperbolic space using tiles, geometric legos and 3D prints. Bjoern Muetzel then explained how the platonic solids are constructed and demonstrated that these are the only five perfect polyhedra. The speaker also showed examples of incredible tessellations created by Andrew Crompton, M. C. Escher, Craig Kaplan, among others, and recommended Robert Fathauer’s book titled “Tessellations: Mathematics, Art and Recreation” (2021). This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
