Forty-Fourth Math Webinar in English

The forty-fourth Math Webinar in English took place on Wednesday, February 19th, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Perla Myers, Executive Director of the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education and Professor of Mathematics at the University of San Diego, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

In this forty-fourth Math Webinar in English, Perla Myers presented on “Enhancing Visuospatial Skills through Paper Play.” The speaker started the virtual event by explaining how the art of origami can make mathematics accessible, meaningful and joyful for all ages. Perla Myers shared data on the Mathigami Project and its evolution to the VisMO curriculum funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the United States, which uses origami to teach visuospatial skills to elementary students. The speaker also showed how these lessons can inspire creativity, reduce math anxiety and improve mathematical understanding through the “3-i” process: identify, imagine and investigate. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
