The Webinar on Math in Netflix, Amazon, Spotify and Other Social Media took place on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 from 4 pm until 5 pm, with Alicia Prieto Langarica, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University in Ohio, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
The invited speaker explained in general how the mathematical algorithms that companies like Netflix, Spotify and Amazon use to make recommendations to their users to keep them connected work. Alicia Prieto Langarica then emphasized the effects on our mental health of being constantly using social media and the importance of human interaction. The speaker also described how technology can be used for good by sharing a concrete example in medicine.
