Thirty-Sixth Math Webinar in English

The thirty-sixth Math Webinar in English took place on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024 from 5 pm until 6 pm with puzzle designer, ambigram lettering artist and recreational mathematician who works as a startup coach and educational game designer with his company gamethinking.io, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

In this thirty-sixth Math Webinar in English, Scott Kim presented on “Ambigrams: Lettering, Symmetry and Creativity”. The speaker described that ambigrams are words written so they read in more than one way, usually right side up and upside down, or with some other mathematical symmetry, like mirror symmetry. Scott Kim mentioned that ambigrams are equal parts mathematics and art and showed multiple examples of ambigrams that he has created. The speaker also explained how you can create an ambigram using the names of some participants and taught us the basics of symmetry and lettering design. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
