The twenty-seventh Math Webinar in English took place on Wednesday, July 5th, 2023 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Susan Goldstine, mathematics professor and artist at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this twenty-seventh Math Webinar in English, Susan Goldstine presented on “Number Sequences in Knitting and Crochet”. The speaker explained that when we knit or crochet, we usually add stitches in rows to create a fabric surface. Susan Goldstine mentioned that if we use the same number of stitches in each row, we make a simple rectangle. The speaker showed several ways that exist to change the number of stitches per row to create more complicated fabrics and shared various examples of spectacular shapes that we can create if we incorporate interesting number sequences into the stitch counts. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
