The Webinar on The Mathematics in your Hands took place on Saturday, June 24th, 2023 from 2 pm until 3 pm, with Raul Ibañez, Professor of Mathematics at the University of the Basque Country in Spain and science communicator, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
The invited speaker began the virtual event by describing the origin of the concept of numbers and mentioned that counting with our fingers, and even with other body parts, is a universal activity that has been practiced by all the people of the world, throughout time. Raul Ibañez then explained the different ways of counting with our fingers from a cultural perspective, showing the techniques that have been developed in diverse cultural and geographic settings. The speaker also showed a magic trick based on binary numbers.
