Forty-First Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians

The forty-first Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Sunday, June 4th, 2023 from 11 am until 12:30 pm. Raquel Tovar, teacher at the Ford 17 Professor Ursula Villarreal Primary School and at the Professor Rafael Tejeda Puente School in Mexico, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

On this forty-first Encounter, Raquel Tovar shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Teaching Math through Recreational Activities.” In this virtual event, Raquel Tovar explained that recreational activities are those whose objective is to have fun and enjoy, instead of accomplish a task or a specific function. The speaker commented that these activities can include games, sports, crafts, music, dance, theater, among others. Raquel Tovar mentioned that recreational activities can help develop a wide variety of math abilities, such as problem solving, critical thinking, numerical skills, geometry and measurements, and spatial thinking.
