The thirty-ninth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, October 27th, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm. Margot Salas, Professor of Mathematics at the Sergio Arboleda University in Colombia, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this thirty-ninth Encounter, Margot Salas shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Are there always two points on the surface of the Earth, in opposite sides, with the same temperature?” In this virtual event, Margot Salas explained what topology is and defined what two points that are diametrically opposite means. The speaker described the Intermediate Value Theorem, the Borsuk-Ulam Theorem, the Ham Sandwich Theorem and the Stolen Necklace Theorem. Margot Salas then briefly shared the story of the mathematicians Stanislaw Ulam and Karol Borsuk.
