The thirty-sixth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, July 28th, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm. Adriana Hansberg, Researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this thirty-sixth Encounter, Adriana Hansberg shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Colored Universes and Curious Patterns.” In this virtual event, Adriana Hansberg showed how three curious patterns are related to Ramsey’s Theorem, Van der Waerden’s Theorem and Schur’s Theorem. The first pattern has to do with the number of people who know each other in a party. The second pattern involves configurations in which three dominoes of the same color are equidistant. The third pattern is related to playing cards of two colors and the sum of the cards with the same color. This virtual event was co-organized with the Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM).
