The thirty-fourth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, May 19th, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm. Amanda Montejano Cantoral, Professor of Mathematics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this thirty-fourth Encounter, Amanda Montejano Cantoral shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Coloring Maps.” In this virtual event, Amanda Montejano Cantoral explored the question: Is there a minimum number of colors that we can use to color any map so that adjacent regions are in different colors? The speaker also explained that the proof of the four-color theorem took more than one thousand hours of computational time and described the existing controversy on whether a math proof can be computer assisted or not. This presentation was based on the speaker’s book in Spanish “Mathematics of Colors.” This virtual event was co-organized with the Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM).
