The Webinar on Science and Feminism: A Possible Junction? took place on Thursday, April 21st, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm with Andrea Vera, Academic at the Math Institute of the University of Valparaiso in Chile, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
The invited speaker started the virtual event by indicating that the female population represents approximately 51% of the world population and that only 34% of the researchers in Chile are women (data from 2018). Andrea Vera then explained why it matters that there are few women and what implications this has in the production of knowledge. The speaker also mentioned the book by Cathy O’Neil entitled “Weapons of Math Destruction,” the project “Math and Gender Rings” in Chile and the Gender Gap Project.
