The thirty-second Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, March 24th, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm. Dr. Gabriela Araujo, Researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and President of the Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM), was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this thirty-second Encounter, Gabriela Araujo shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Mathematics and Popularity on Facebook,” in which she described that people considered popular on Facebook have many friends, quickly cover the network and are strategically placed among their friends. Gabriela Araujo then translated this to mathematics, specifically to the concept of graphs, and used the Erdos number as an example.
