The thirty-first Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, February 17th, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm. Edith Padron, Professor at the University of La Laguna in Spain, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this thirty-first Encounter, Edith Padron shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Without curves, there is no geometry,” in which she described the curves that are constructed from movement. The speaker showed a scene from the movie Agora and then defined conics. Edith Padron presented on Bernoulli’s challenges, the brachistochrone curve, the water slides, the cardioid microphones and Gauss curvature.
