Abstract: In 2012, a college friend of Dana Mackenzie sent him a recreational math problem involving horse races that took him a year to solve. Mackenzie’s friend had posed this problem to every mathematician he could, for 30 years, but had never found anyone who was either able to solve it or knew the answer. But the problem was considerably older than that! It dates back to Sun Bin, a legendary military strategist in China in the 4th century BC.
