Math Webinar in English #54

The Math Webinar in English #54 took place on Wednesday, March 11th, 2026 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Christine Liu-Perkins, who earned her PhD in Educational Psychology before turning to writing books for children, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

In this Math Webinar in English, Christine Liu-Perkins presented on “Using Tangrams to Teach Geometry”. The speaker explained that the tangram is a fun, hands-on and effective tool to develop geometric skills in all academic levels from preschool to high school. Christine Liu-Perkins also showed that by working with tangrams, abstract concepts become visual, concrete and engaging for students and shared images of her book “The Quest for a Tangram Dragon”, a story that introduces children to tangrams, which won the 2025 Mathical Book Prize for Young Readers. The speaker then presented several examples of different ways in which we can use tangrams to learn about fractions, percentages, perimeter, area, among other mathematical notions. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). This was the first Math Webinar in English of 2026.
