Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians #50

The Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians #50 took place on Wednesday, September 17th, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm. Ruth Torres, Director of the Math Program at the Konrad Lorenz University Foundation in Colombia, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

On this Encounter, Ruth Torres shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “What if dancing salsa could be learned with math?” In this virtual event, Ruth Torres explained the multiple connections between music and math and showed how counting, rhythmic patterns, symmetries and geometry offer tools to understand movement, coordinate dancing steps and enjoy salsa more. The speaker also put the audience to dance sharing several popular salsa songs.
