The forty-second Math Webinar in English took place on Thursday, November 21st, 2024 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Sarah Hart, Professor Emerita of Mathematics at Birkbeck College, University of London, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this forty-second Math Webinar in English, Sarah Hart presented on “A Mathematical Journey Through Literature.” The speaker described mathematical ideas used in literature, mentioned several hidden mathematical structures in poetry and novels, and presented examples on metaphors and symbolism in children’s fairytales and other literary works. Sarah Hart then showed that not only are mathematics and literature intrinsically linked, but also understanding these connections can enhance our enjoyment of both. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
