The thirty-seventh Math Webinar in English took place on Thursday, June 20th, 2024 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Yossi Elran, Recreational Mathematician at the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this thirty-seventh Math Webinar in English, Yossi Elran presented on “Paper Puzzles”. The speaker described the Fujimoto approximation and mentioned the origami works of Krystyna Burczyk and Robert Lang. Yossi Elran then showed how to divide a square into three equal parts, how to convert a rectangle into a square, how to transform a square into an equilateral triangle, how to convert a strip of paper into a pentagon, how to transform a strip of paper into a Mobius band, how to create a cube using a strip of paper, how to make flexagons, among other mathematical challenges. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
