The forty-fourth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024 from 5 pm until 6 pm. Christa Amezcua, Professor of Mathematics at the Los Altos School Center in Guadalajara, Mexico, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this forty-fourth Encounter, Christa Amezcua shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Mathematics in the Musical Scale.” In this virtual event, Christa Amezcua explained where the notes of the musical octave came from. The speaker used the Pythagorean method to reconstruct this musical scale, by using a paper strip and fractions. Christa Amezcua also performed demonstrations with her violin and described how she uses music, astronomy, clothing manufacture, among other topics, to motivate the study of mathematics in her classroom.
