The forty-second Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Sunday, September 17th, 2023 from 11 am until 12 pm. Alma Gomez, Maya K’iche’, Bachelor in Mathematics and Physics Teaching and educator in Guatemala, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this forty-second Encounter, Alma Gomez shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Mayan Mathematics.” In this virtual event, Alma Gomez explained the territory that was covered by the Mayan population and described the Mayan calendar. The speaker also shared the connections between the Mayan mathematics with harvesting corn and with knitting fabrics and defined the vigesimal system that was used by the Mayans.
