The Webinar on Math Reflections, from the Kitchen to the Telescopes, took place on Thursday, September 1st, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm with Alberto Mercado-Saucedo, Professor of Mathematics at the Federico Santa Maria Technical University in Chile, as our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
The speaker explained how light is transmitted, how a mirror works and how light rays are reflected off flat and curved surfaces. Alberto Mercado-Saucedo then described what is the shortest distance an ant has to walk on the surface of a cube to reach from one extreme to the other and presented how this problem is related to the question: how long does a mirror have to be so that you can see your full body? The speaker also shared the applications of these topics in daily life: in parabolic antennas, in telescopes, in math kitchens, among others.
