The Celebration of the International Day for Women in Mathematics 2022 took place on Thursday, May 12th, 2022 from 4 pm until 5 pm with Marta Macho-Stadler, Laura Pezzatti and Leslie Jimenez as our invited speakers. Marta Macho-Stadler shared the story of Maryam Mirzakhani, Laura Pezzatti performed several mathemagic tricks and Leslie Jimenez described how we can learn math using images. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
And why May 12th? Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017) became the first woman to receive the Fields Medal in 2014. The Fields Medal is the most prestigious award given by the international math community, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in Mathematics. On May 12th, her birthday, we celebrate the International Day for Women in Mathematics. This celebration began when on July 31st, 2018, the Women’s Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society presented to the participants of the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics a proposal to celebrate women in mathematics on May 12th, and the proposal was approved. May 12th, 2019 was the first official celebration of the International Day for Women in Mathematics. For more information on this celebration, visit the website: https://may12.womeninmaths.org.
