The thirtieth Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians took place on Thursday, January 27th, 2022 from 5 pm until 6 pm. Liliana Forzani, Professor at the National University of Litoral in Argentina and President of the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean (UMALCA), was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
On this thirtieth Encounter, Liliana Forzani shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician, highlighting that thanks to her math studies, she has had the opportunity to meet wonderful people and travel to amazing countries. The speaker also presented on “And the Oscar goes to…” in which she explained the preferential voting system that is used to determine the Oscar winners. Liliana Forzani described that the 4 principles that we expect from a fair voting system are: the last will not be the first, they beat them all head to head, multiple districts and more cannot be less. The speaker also shared how these 4 principles are related to the Theorem of Kenneth Arrow, who is a math economist winner of the Nobel Prize.
