On Monday, January 5th, 2026 we organized a Storytelling Session: “Finding the Light in the Darkness” at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM), largest annual math conference that unites thousands of mathematicians from the international community. In this session, Michael Dorff, Alvina Atkinson, Apoorva Mate, Kathryn Kozak, Matilde Lalin, Kathi Crow, Jenna Carpenter and Victor Piercey participated as our invited speakers, who shared stories about how they discovered their passion despite barriers/setbacks/challenges in their careers and how they persevered finding the light in the darkness. This session took place in Room 207A at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the United States.
