The Math Webinar in English #55 took place on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026 from 5 pm until 6 pm with Siddhi Soni, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Eastern Connecticut State University, and Alyssa Harbin, Professor in the Education Department at University of Central Florida, as our invited speakers. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.
In this Math Webinar in English, Siddhi Soni and Alyssa Harbin presented on “Cultivating Joy and Appreciation of Mathematics through Textile Arts”. The speakers commented on the history of barn quilts and shared several examples of quilt designs from all over the world. Siddhi Soni and Alyssa Harbin then mentioned how children’s first experiences with mathematics in the classroom tend to be and highlighted that through textile arts, we can cultivate joy and appreciation of mathematics. The speakers also invited the participants to design their own quilt that represents themselves, their family and/or their community. This virtual event was co-organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
