Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians #51

The Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians #51 took place on Wednesday, October 15th, 2025 from 5 pm until 6 pm. Dr. Laura Jimenez Jimenez, Researcher at the Mathematical Modeling Center of the University of Chile, was our invited speaker. This virtual event was free and open to the general public.

On this Encounter, Dr. Laura Jimenez Jimenez shared anecdotes of her personal life and her professional journey as a female mathematician. The speaker also presented on “Ecology with Numbers”. In this virtual event, Dr. Laura Jimenez Jimenez explained what quantitative ecology is and what the biodiversity metrics are. The speaker showed several examples of the ecological problems in which mathematical models are key to propose strategies of conservation and biodiversity management, as well as to face the consequences of global climate change. Dr. Laura Jimenez Jimenez then described the biogeographical patterns of marine plankton and the optimal sampling design to estimate population densities of zebra mussels. This was the last FUNDAPROMAT Virtual Encounter with Outstanding Mathematicians of 2025.
