Abstract: For centuries, cultures around the world have used mathematical ideas within their art, architecture, and everyday practices. Despite the widespread integration of mathematics in artistic, architectural, historical and cultural practices, such connections have been underrepresented in mathematics education. Grounded in an ethnomodeling perspective which values and explores the mathematical contributions of diverse cultures, this webinar will illuminate the deep connections between mathematics and the arts with a particular focus on textile art traditions from around the world. Such ethnomodeling tasks not only promote deep mathematical understanding but also foster joy and appreciation for human creativity and cultural heritage.
